Silica is the most abundant component of the Earth's crust, having its occurrence distributed in the globe from the shape of quartz crystals, rocks, sand and amethysts to skeletons of fossilized sponges. Chemically silica is a silicon dioxide (SiO2), a material usually inert and insoluble in most solvents. The following is a brief report on natural and synthetic silicas commercialized worldwide.
