Description
Phosphates, such as zinc phosphate tetrahydrate, have been used as ceramic materials, catalysts, fluorescent materials, adsorbents, dielectric substances, metal-surface treatments, detergents, fertilizers, in fuel cells, pigments, etc. Zinc phosphate tetrahydrate is a colorless microcrystalline powder. It is soluble in mineral acids; almost insoluble in water and is insoluble in ethanol. According to ASTM D6280-98(2020) standard, zinc phosphate exists as a dihydrate (Zn3(PO4)2·2H2O, CAS 7779-90-0), tetrahydrate (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, CAS 7543-51-3), or mixtures thereof. These hydrated salts can be dehydrated to Zn3(PO4)2 as needed. Zinc phosphate tetrahydrate is widely used as a corrosion resistant coating on metal surfaces either as part of an electroplating process or applied as a primer pigment. In anti-rust applications, zinc phosphate is used as a base material for aldol, phenolic, epoxy resin, chlorinated rubber coatings; where it replaces toxic antirust pigments such as red lead, zinc chromium yellow, etc. It protects steel, aluminum, magnesium alloys, titanium, copper, and brass metal surfaces from anodic and cathodic corrosion. Other industrial applications include hydrocarbon conversion catalysis, phosphor host matrix, phosphate cement, etc.
